Why Sherlock Holmes Is the Perfect Champion of Value Selling

Every now and again someone asks why I keep returning to Sherlock Holmes as a metaphor for value selling.

The answer is simple: because he is the best model I know for how a great salesperson should think.

Holmes doesn't rush to conclusions. He observes. He listens. He asks questions that others wouldn't think to ask. He is genuinely curious about the world in front of him — not because he has been told to be curious, but because he cannot help it.

And crucially, he never assumes he already knows the answer.

This is exactly what separates the best value sellers from the rest.

The average salesperson walks into a meeting already knowing what they're going to say. They've prepared their pitch. They've rehearsed their features. They've decided, before the conversation has even started, what the customer needs.

Holmes would find this baffling.

"You have seen," he once told Watson, "but you have not observed. The distinction is clear."

In sales terms: you have heard, but you have not listened. You have spoken, but you have not understood.

The great value sellers — the ones who consistently win at the right margin, who build genuine loyalty, who are genuinely valued by their customers — do something different. They treat every sales conversation as an investigation. They arrive curious. They ask questions that surface the real problem, not just the presenting symptom. They understand the consequences of inaction. They connect their solution to outcomes that actually matter to the customer.

This is the Sherlock Holmes approach. And it works.

Not because it is clever. But because it is honest. Because it puts the customer's reality at the centre of the conversation, not the seller's product.

Holmes would make an exceptional value seller. Not despite his eccentricities — but because of his fundamental commitment to truth, evidence, and understanding before action.

The question is: would your sales team?
