Sales Enablement That Changes Behaviour — Sherlock
A Sherlock Holmes Story By Dr. John H. Watson
Holmes had seen many sales enablement programmes in his time. But none quite like this one.
The client — a beleaguered Sales Director named Irene Adler-Smythe — arrived at Baker Street with a thick folder of slide decks, competency frameworks, and a haunted look in her eyes.
"Mr Holmes," she said, "we have invested considerably in our enablement function. New platform. New content. New certification tracks. And yet — our sellers are still pitching features, still discounting on demand, still unable to articulate why a customer should choose us over anyone else."
Holmes took the folder and flipped through it with the speed of a man who had seen this before.
"Tell me," he said, "what does your enablement programme teach them about value?"
She hesitated. "We have a module on value propositions."
"One module."
"Yes."
Holmes set the folder down. "And how long is the module?"
"Forty-five minutes. Self-paced. With a quiz at the end."
Holmes looked at Watson. Watson looked at Holmes.
"Mrs Adler-Smythe," Holmes said carefully, "you have not built an enablement programme. You have built a compliance exercise with a value-shaped hole in the middle."
She stared. "But the platform has a 94% completion rate."
"Completion," Holmes replied, "is not competence. Your sellers have clicked through the slides. They have passed the quiz. They have received their badge. And they have learned precisely nothing about how to have a value conversation with a real customer in a real situation."
He stood and walked to the window.
"The scandal," he said quietly, "is not that your sellers can't sell value. It is that no one has ever truly taught them how. One module, forty-five minutes, no practice, no coaching, no reinforcement. And then we wonder why the behaviour doesn't change."
He turned back.
"Value selling is not a concept to be understood. It is a skill to be practised. Repeatedly. With feedback. In context. Over time."
Mrs Adler-Smythe was quiet for a long moment.
"So what do we do?"
Holmes almost smiled. "We start again. But this time, we build it around the conversations your sellers actually need to have — not the content your enablement team found easiest to produce."
