What Great Sales Leaders Do Differently
Most sales leaders think they're leading, but in reality, many are just managing. They're deep in the numbers, chasing forecasts, reviewing pipelines, and firefighting the deals that are about to go wrong.
That is management. It is necessary. But it is not leadership.
Great sales leaders do something different. Here is what separates them.
They coach, not just manage
The average sales manager reviews the pipeline and asks "where are we with this deal?" The great sales leader asks "what does the customer actually value here, and how are we demonstrating that?" One is a status check. The other is coaching.
They focus on behaviour, not just results
Results are a lagging indicator. By the time the numbers tell you something is wrong, it is usually too late to fix it. Great sales leaders pay attention to the leading indicators — the quality of discovery conversations, the relevance of proposals, the depth of customer relationships. They coach the behaviour that produces the results, not just the results themselves.
They create a culture of value, not just volume
In many sales teams, the unspoken message is: close more deals. Great sales leaders send a different message: win the right deals, at the right margin, for the right reasons. They celebrate the deal that was walked away from because the margin wasn't there. They challenge the team to justify price, not just discount it.
They develop people, not just performance
The best sales leaders I have worked with are obsessed with the development of their people. Not just training courses and competency frameworks — but real, ongoing, in-the-moment coaching that helps sellers grow their capability over time.
They model the behaviour they expect
If you want your team to have value conversations, have them yourself. If you want your team to prepare properly for meetings, prepare properly yourself. Great sales leaders don't just set standards — they demonstrate them.
