Is Trust Still Enough in Sales?
For a long time, trust was the foundation of B2B sales. Build the relationship, earn the trust, and the business would follow.
Is that still true?
Partly. Trust is still necessary. But it is no longer sufficient.
Here's why.
The nature of buying has changed. More people are involved in purchasing decisions than ever before. The average B2B purchase now involves between six and ten stakeholders. Many of them have never met you. Many of them never will. And they are not going to make a decision based on your relationship with one person in the organisation.
They are going to make a decision based on evidence. On the business case. On the demonstrable value of what you are offering compared to the alternatives — including doing nothing.
This means that trust, while still important, is no longer enough on its own. You also need to be able to articulate value in a way that makes sense to people who don't know you, don't trust you yet, and are looking for reasons to say no.
The sellers who thrive in this environment are the ones who can do both. They build genuine relationships with the people they work with. And they build a compelling, evidence-based case for value that can stand on its own — even in a room where they're not present.
If your sales approach relies primarily on relationships and trust, it is worth asking: what happens when your contact leaves? What happens when the decision goes up a level? What happens when procurement gets involved?
Trust opens the door. Value keeps it open.
