How to Prevent Price Objections in B2B Sales
Salespeople love to complain about price objections.
Buyers are too focused on price. Procurement is squeezing margins. The market has become commoditised. Everyone is racing to the bottom.
Here's an uncomfortable truth: most price objections are the seller's fault.
Not the buyer's. Not the market's. The seller's.
When a buyer says "your price is too high," what they are almost always saying is one of three things:
1. "I don't understand why your price is justified."
2. "I don't see enough difference between you and the alternatives."
3. "I haven't been given a compelling enough reason to pay more."
All three of these are failures of value communication, not failures of pricing.
If the buyer understood exactly what they were getting, why it was worth the premium, and what the cost of the cheaper alternative would be in the long run — they would not be objecting to your price. They might still negotiate. But they would not be objecting.
The price objection is a symptom. The disease is a failure to establish value before the price conversation begins.
This is why the sequence matters so much. Value first. Price second. If you lead with price — or allow the conversation to get to price before value has been established — you will get price objections. Every time.
The fix is not to get better at handling price objections. The fix is to do a better job of establishing value so that the price objection never arises.
Next time you get a price objection, don't blame the buyer. Ask yourself: did I do enough to establish the value before we got here?
