Building a Value-Driven Sales Team
A sales team focused on value can be one of the most powerful competitive advantages a business can have.
But building one is harder than it sounds. It requires more than training. It requires a shift in culture, in leadership, and in the way success is measured.
Here is what I have learned from working with sales teams across a wide range of industries over the past 25 years.
Start with the right mindset
A value-driven sales team starts with a fundamental belief: that the customer's definition of value is the only one that matters. Not the company's definition. Not the product manager's definition. The customer's.
This sounds obvious. But in practice, most sales conversations are still driven by what the seller wants to say, not by what the customer wants to hear.
Hire for curiosity
The single most important trait in a value seller is genuine curiosity. The ability — and the desire — to ask questions, to listen, to understand the customer's world before offering a solution.
Curiosity cannot be trained into someone who doesn't have it. Hire for it.
Coach the conversation, not just the close
Most sales coaching focuses on the end of the sales process — the negotiation, the close, the objection handling. Value-driven coaching focuses on the beginning: the quality of the discovery conversation, the depth of understanding, the relevance of the value proposition.
Measure what matters
If you measure only revenue and volume, you will get revenue and volume — often at the expense of margin and customer satisfaction. Value-driven teams also measure margin, customer retention, and the quality of customer relationships.
Reinforce continuously
Training is a starting point, not an end point. The behaviours that define a value-driven sales team need to be reinforced through coaching, through recognition, and through the stories that leaders tell about what good looks like.
