Sherlock Holmes' Three Spirits of Value
A Seasonal Reflection as captured by Dr. John H. Watson
Over supper that evening, Holmes was uncharacteristically quiet. The success of the Cratchley case had pleased him, though he would never admit it. He sat by the fire, fingertips together, eyes half-closed.
"Holmes," I said, "you've been in that position for ten minutes. Are you thinking or napping?"
"Reflecting," he replied. "Dickens has reminded me of something important."
He leaned forward.
"There are, Watson, three spirits that visit every seller at Christmas. And most ignore them at their peril."
I smiled. "Then I must hear them."
Holmes nodded.
The Spirit of Value Past
"This spirit shows you every deal lost because the seller talked too much about themselves and too little about the client's problem. It whispers reminders of opportunities that slipped because no one asked the questions that mattered. Regret. But also lessons."
He paused.
The Spirit of Value Present
"This spirit stands beside the seller today, pointing, often impatiently, at the conversations they should be having right now. Real discovery. Real curiosity. Real clarity on why the client should act. It shows the truth of the current pipeline, stripped of optimism."
"And the third?" I asked.
Holmes' expression softened.
The Spirit of Value Yet to Come
"A stern visitor. It reveals what happens if sellers continue discounting, rushing to pitch, relying on automation instead of thought. But it also shows the opposite. Strong margins. Strong relationships. Loyalty earned through trust and relevance. A future defined not by fear, but by value."
He stood and stretched, the firelight catching the faintest smile at the corner of his mouth.
"Dickens used ghosts to remind Scrooge of what truly mattered," he said. "I prefer data and deduction. But the result is the same. If you see clearly, you choose better."
He reached for his coat.
"Come, Watson. There is mulled wine to be found somewhere in this city."
And with that, we stepped out into the crisp Christmas night.
