Another Sales Mystery for Sherlock Holmes: The Case of the Leaky Sales Pipeline

Mike Wilkinson

The Case of the Leaky Sales Pipeline

It was a misty morning at 221B Baker Street when Mr. Graves, a despondent sales director, hurried in. "Holmes, our sales pipeline is a disaster! We're adding prospects at the top, but nothing's coming out the other end. What's going wrong?"

Holmes, ever the keen observer, leaned back in his chair. "A clogged or leaky pipeline, Mr. Graves, is a serious matter indeed. But fear not, for the issue is often one of quality over quantity. Watson, to Graves & Co.!"

At Graves & Co., Holmes wasted no time reviewing the sales process. He observed an abundance of leads being funneled into the pipeline, but they lacked the consistency and structure necessary to turn them into real opportunities.

"Holmes, why aren't these leads converting?" Mr. Graves asked in frustration.

"Elementary," Holmes replied, his eyes narrowing. "The pipeline isn't suffering from a lack of leads. It's suffering from a lack of qualified leads and a poorly defined process. Let's begin by addressing these issues."

Step 1: Diagnosing the Pipeline Quality

Holmes started by examining the quality of leads entering the pipeline. "Not all leads are created equal, Mr. Graves. Are you sure the prospects entering your pipeline have both the need and the means to buy? Do they all pass the 'Do we/Can we' test? Do we want it, can we win it?"

Holmes advised implementing a stricter qualification process. "Filter out opportunities that we either cannot win or don't really want to win and then filter out those who are not decision-makers or who lack the budget and urgency. A well-qualified lead is far more likely to progress through the pipeline than one who's just a name on a list."

Step 2: Scrutinizing the Sales Process

Next, Holmes turned his attention to the sales process itself. "Watson, what do you observe?"

"Well, Holmes," Watson began, "there seems to be no clear progression from one stage to the next. Deals are stalling, and the team doesn't seem to know how to move them forward."

"Precisely," Holmes remarked. "A defined sales process is critical. You must have clear milestones and know exactly what actions are required at each stage. This not only keeps the process moving but gives your team a roadmap for success. One of the keys is proactivity. To keep things moving forward you need to keep on top of things."

Step 3: Strengthening Discovery Conversations

Holmes then focused on discovery conversations. "Your team must engage in deeper, more meaningful discussions with prospects. If you don't understand their true needs and priorities, how can you offer a solution that feels indispensable?"

Holmes trained Mr. Graves's team to ask better questions and to listen closely. "Uncover the real pain points and value drivers. Once you understand what truly matters to the prospect, you can position your solution in a way that resonates."

Step 4: Closing the Gaps

Finally, Holmes addressed the lingering gaps. "What you have, Mr. Graves, is a pipeline filled with activity but lacking focus on conversion. Focus on a smaller number of high-quality leads, nurture them with a strong value proposition, and create urgency by addressing their most pressing needs."

With a refined process, tighter qualification, and stronger sales conversations, the once-clogged pipeline began to flow again. Soon, deals that had been languishing were revived or removed, and new prospects progressed smoothly through the funnel.

"Holmes, you've saved our sales pipeline!" Mr. Graves exclaimed.

"Elementary, my dear Graves," Holmes replied, smiling. "It's not the size of the pipeline that matters, but its strength and clarity."

If your sales pipeline isn't delivering the results you expect, let's work together to uncover the root cause and fix it.
